Gail Carson Levine's characters have spirit. Her stories are often favorite fairy tales with a twist, with characters such as feisty princesses who live in castles, and an enchanted girl named Ella who was cursed by a fairy to always be obedient. She's also written a biography that describes the life of her father, who became a young entrepreneur while living in a Hebrew orphanage in New York City. Her book Ella Enchanted won a Newbery Honor award.
